The man on a rack




Etching with engraving 562x417. Second state of two (Second Edition, First Issue, 1761), before the roman number II. Plate  II from the Piranesi's  Carceri d'invenzione. Inscribed in the lower margin the address, price and Piranesi's  signature. The first state, before signature and address, is known in only one impression included in a second Edition, First Issue, set of Carceri in the Marciana Library in Venice.

The So-Called Grotto of Egeria




Etching 395x680. Second state of five, with added lines of foliage on top of building above the fountain and added shading in various places, but before any numeration.  Title in cartouche at lower right "Veduta delle Fonte e delle Spelonche
d'Egeria fuor della porta Capena...".

Questo Sepolcro non si sa a qual Famiglia abbia potuto appartenere, stante che gli è stata levata la sua antica Iscrizione".

The Monumental Tablet (first plate of the complete set called the Grotteschi)




Etching, engraving, drypoint and scratching 391x536 mm. First state of five (First Edition; 1747-1749), with lower left corner of plate broken at tip and with concave identation. Signed in image " Piranesi inv, incise  e vende di rimpetto all'accademia di Francia in Roma" at lower toward left.
The four large, horizontal plates Piranesi called the Grotteschi depict evocative mélanges of ancient bones and artifacts associating human, cultural and architectural decay. Because of what is frequently seen as their Tiepolesque character, the Grotteschi have been considered Piranesi's most Venetian prints.
